Rilkekind developed a (frightening but entirely transitory) case of jaundice, requiring a long tan (and a long separation - oops, duty yells:

Good thing they have that sign in the background or else if you left momentarily you'd have no more baby.

He's be the most adorable newborn I've seen.

Congratulations! Rilkekind is indeed very very cute.

I had jaundice as an infant, and as far as I know, it's had absolutely no aftereffects--though I can imagine that it isn't at all fun for parents.

To you and Rilkefrau, then, courage!

The sign is actually on a clumsily framed sheet of colored plastic in the foreground through which the illuminated rilkekind has an approximately normal appearance despite the blue-tinged light of the bilirubin box; the full sentence reads "Please do not throw away sheet", presumably because with the lights off it looks like an old sheet of yellow plastic taped to a high-tech box.

He ended up in the Nicu for complex reasons, which definitely isn't a fun place - going there felt like walking down a quiet hallway hung with paintings of horses and photographs of temples on precipices in China to open a heavy door behind which it turns out an apocaplyptic rock concert is taking place. But if r turns out as well as jm I'll be well content.

He's beautifull Rilkefan! Congratulations for you and mrs R.

My second son had jaundice too (due to difference in bloodtype between me and him). Few days under de light and he never had any kind of problem anymore. I hope he may come home soon! Is it sunny, where you live (sunbathing helps too, my firstborn managed with just more sun, no lights).

Our daughter had the same thing, the pics of her catching some rays are one we especially like to pull out. You may try to get a palm tree background for added fun.

Jackmormon, thanks for the kind words on my wife's blog. I would have replied there, but I can never remember my blogger ID info.

You can't fool us.

That's the ruby visor that protects the rest of the nursery from his powerful optic blasts.

Congratulations!

Watch out for bald men in wheelchairs.

Congratulations! Hope Rilkebaby comes home soon. NICU is definitely not a fun place, but neonatal jaundice almost always comes out ok.
